ABSTRACT
This chapter describes my work on a paediatric ward within a large hospital in a central London National Health Service (NHS) trust. I will use the clinical material from twenty-four sessions with a four-year-old girl called Rosie, who had a congenital heart defect, in order to illustrate the function of art psychotherapy on a children’s ward. The title of this chapter refers to Rosie’s coping with and thinking about the sad and frightening aspects of being in hospital and her making sense of what was going on in her body through her art making within the therapeutic relationship.
