ABSTRACT

Figure 5.1 was the first image that three-year-old Oliver made in art therapy (Figure 5.1). He was trying to communicate his thoughts and feelings but did not have the words to express them. The image shows his tentative steps in mark making and exploration made by dipping the feet of a toy lion into the blue paint that he had insisted his mother pour out for him. This felt like the beginning of his journey towards relational independence: he became excited by his actions and consequently found the courage to move the blue marks closer to himself.
