ABSTRACT
The UK government began to roll out a nationwide programme of Sure Start centres in 2001 with the aim of supporting the lives of children and their families, particularly in the most deprived communities. Child development and ‘school readiness’ were key aims, alongside building parenting skills and aspirations. The hope was that the children would go on to access education, training and employment, preventing poor children from growing up to become poor adults.
