ABSTRACT

The Objective 1 programme for the Highlands and Islands of Scotland runs from 1994–1999. The area will receive about 311 million ecu (mecu) (£255m) of EU Structural Fund assistance over this period, to be matched by public sector contributions of 406 mecu from the UK and 295 mecu from the private sector. Although a substantial sum, the annual spend from the programme represents less than two per cent of regional GDP for the Highlands and Islands.
