ABSTRACT
Unionism in the 1980s Political Unionism in Northern Ireland is not a monolith. It was not after its emergence as a parliamentary force during the Home Rule debates of the 1880s, and it certainly is not in contemporary Northern Ireland. There exist two competing strands within Unionism which constantly vie with each other for political support amongst the majority community of Northern Ireland.
