ABSTRACT

The circumscribed set of notions treated here is that covered by the SED Questionnaire. Additional lexical items appear which are not direct responses to questions asked during the SED fieldwork. These are 'Incidental Material' responses which are printed in the volumes of SED findings (Basic Material) from which the dictionary is compiled. The SED Questionnaire covers some 1,300 notions, the precise number varying slightly depending on the version of the questionnaire in use at various periods of the fieldwork programme. It was therefore not feasible to adopt a conventional lexicographic approach to the data, since a conventional dictionary would contain only a small set of definitions, which would have to be repeated many times whenever a notion was realized by a wide variety of lexical items countrywide.
