ABSTRACT

Situated in the south central part of the Balkan Peninsula, the Republic of Macedonia has 2 mil­ lion inhabitants (65 per cent Macedonian, 21 per cent Albanian, 4 per cent Turkish, 2 per cent Serbian, 3 per cent Romany, 5 per cent Muslim, Vlach, Montenegrin and Croat). Covering an area of 25,700 square kilometres (9,900 square miles). Its Capital is Skopje and its principal towns are Bitola, Prilep, Kumanovo, Tetovo, Titov Veles and Stip.
