ABSTRACT

Located on the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, Romania is bounded by the Ukraine and Moldova to the north and northeast, the Black Sea to the east, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the southwest and Hungary to the northwest. The country’s official language is Romanian, a neo-Latin language, mother tongue to about 89 per cent of the population. Among other languages spoken in the country are Hungarian, German, Yiddish and Greek. The country’s 1991 population was 23.2 mil­ lion, with just over 2.3 million people living in the Capital city of Bucharest.
