ABSTRACT

Part of the Scandinavian peninsula, Sweden is situated in the northernmost part of Europe. The country is large (450,000 square kilometres or 174,000 square miles), but sparsely populated (its 1990 population was 8.6 million). Sweden’s capital is Stockholm with a population of 1.5 million, which together with the second largest city Göteborg (Gothenberg, population 731,000) and the university towns Lund, Uppsala and Umeä constitute the main cultural centres. Malmö (population 475,000) is Sweden’s third largest city, with a flourishing theatre scene.
