ABSTRACT

In this chapter Chris Mills describes her work as a peripatetic support teacher for traveller children. She made the transition to this work after supporting children who experience difficulties in learning in the mainstream and was surprised by the extent and depth of the prejudice towards the children that she encountered. She provides an example of practice where the contribution of the children to school life was welcomed but indicates the negative attitudes and misunderstandings which she found in the schools on her patch. She argues that progress towards recognising the curricular needs of this minority group has been pitifully slow despite the attention given to them in a series of government reports.
