ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the perceptions of parents of their role in the assessment of their child’s special educational needs as part of the Statementing process carried out under the 1981 Education Act. The analysis is based on observations of professional-parent and professional-child interactions during the assessments of thirty children referred to the Schools Psychological Service in three LEAs because they were thought to have emotional and behavioural difficulties. In each case these observations were complemented by interviews held with the participants.
