ABSTRACT

Despite our children’s different handicaps or problems parents like me often find that we have many experiences and feelings in common. Most of us get confused by the education scene which always seems to be changing. Few of us really understand the 1981 Education Act. We don’t know what all the professionals actually do. Everyone feels muddled by the National Curriculum and local management of schools. It’s very worrying if we’re trying to get our child into the local school; and I’ve been told it’s just as worrying if you’re trying to get your child out of the local school into some specialist place. Parents and professionals don’t seem to talk the same language and misunderstandings can sometimes have disastrous effects. We’re always being told that there’s not enough money to go around; so we feel as if our children may never get what they really need.
