ABSTRACT

Linda Jordan is chair of the schools’ sub-committee in the London Borough of Newham council. In this chapter she describes the attempts in Newham to introduce a clear policy on integration and to link it with an analysis of and developments within mainstream primary, secondary and further education. She discusses the emergence of a group within the council after the local elections of 1986 who were able to agree on policy guidelines and make considerable progress in ending segregation in the borough.
