ABSTRACT

Mary Newton is head of the learning support service in Staffordshire. In this chapter she describes the changes that took place in the service during the 1980s from peripatetic remedial work within individual pupils to a service offering curriculum support and development, collaborative teaching and encouraging parental involvement. She takes a critical look at the impact of the 1988 Education Reform Act on the work and the inadequacies of funding following LMS. She argues strongly for the retention of local education authority wide support services against the trends to devolution.
