ABSTRACT

Christine Gilbert is the deputy director of education in the London Borough of Harrow and in this chapter she outlines an approach to writing a development plan for a school. She sees such planning as complementing the development of a ‘Curricular response to diversity’ described in Chapter 2 for the school at which she was previously head teacher. The chapter looks at the advantages of writing a school development plan, at the details of the planning process and at elements of the procedures adopted and plans devised at both Whitmore High School and Vaughan First and Middle School. The case studies are presented as working examples not paradigms. Christine Gilbert argues that a development plan and the process of producing it, will depend on the particular history and culture of the school.
