ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the story of the closure of Etton Pasture School after Roger Kidd was appointed as its head. In his previous school, for pupils designated as having severe learning difficulties, he had promoted the attachment of his pupils to neighbouring primary and secondary schools. At Etton Pasture, he negotiated, with parents and staff, the transfer of his pupils into resource bases in mainstream schools in accordance with a local authority policy. This involved the replacement of his school by a school catering for those pupils who had been sent out of the county to school for pupils categorised as having ‘emotional and behavioural disturbance’.
