ABSTRACT

In this chapter Sheila Cunnison describes an action research project designed to increase the equality of opportunity of boys and girls in a Humberside primary school. She gives an account of the culture surrounding the school and the view of equalising opportunity through positive action contained in the project. She examines the attempts made to raise the teachers’ awareness of both gender stereotyping and the attention given to boys and girls in the classroom, and reports on the specific mini-projects class teachers designed to work on one aspect of equalising opportunities. Her chapter provides an opportunity to reflect on the value placed on the activities of girls and boys and the way these may be related to disaffection, disruption and difficulties in learning.
