ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the initial evaluation of the Drumchapel Healthy Cities Project set up in July 1990. Its purpose was to examine and confront health issues in Drumchapel, a post-war housing scheme in Glasgow with a population of around 22,000. The project's executive group comprised representatives of the funding bodies, the project co-ordinator, representatives from the local community organizations council and, eventually, a community health volunteer. The executive and working groups were anxious that evaluation should proceed throughout the pilot phase and the Professor of Public Health at the local university offered to collaborate in this. The community health volunteer project was identified as an important area of evaluation because it was a novel idea and one likely to be of interest to other community groups. Community health volunteers were recruited and offered a training course.
