ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the research and evaluation activity that was conducted in Noarlunga during the period of the pilot project. The Noarlunga Healthy Cities Pilot Project was part of an Australian programme which sought to determine the applicability of the World Health Organization's Healthy Cities project to Australia. The research for Healthy Cities Noarlunga was undertaken by the Southern Community Health Research Unit (SCHRU). Noarlunga has provided a good political and social policy environment for the Healthy Cities project. In the Noarlunga study, the framework used by the research team was informed by an understanding of the social basis of health status. The Noarlunga evaluation collected information on the following topics: policy changes, collaboration between different sectors in services provision and planning, planning, community involvement and awareness, changes in the way local public service workers approached their work, perceptions of key stakeholders' perceptions of the project.
