Expenditure on health care has risen steadily across the industrial world both over time and with growing affluence. However, it can be seen from Table 7.1 that the UK National Health Service has remained in the lower reaches of this area of public expenditure, measured both in terms of percentage of GDP and in terms of actual expenditure. Internationally, then, the National Health Service might consider itself one of the great successes of public finance efficiency.
