ABSTRACT

From a background in nursing and sociology, Susan Brock discusses her study of the experiences of disabled students in higher education in the context of her developing ideas about research methodology. She considers the characteristics of what has been called ‘emancipatory’ research and evaluates how far they match her own work. She is committed to an approach which defines its activities in terms set by the participants and which aims to effect positive change in policy and practice. During the course of her research, Susan has come to identify herself as a disabled person.
