ABSTRACT
Just as the coverage of industry is organized around limited and conservative explanations, so is news on the economy as a whole. In this case we show how television news was organized around an account which blamed inflation mainly on wages and then linked this explanation to the political policy of wage restraint. Here again what underpins media coverage is scrutiny of working people rather than an analysis of ‘normal’ operations of the economy and its ability to generate crisis.
