ABSTRACT
In his production of Calderon’s The Constant Prince, Grotowski has chosen to eschew the play’s prophecy, and what I believe to be its focal image:
Trade darkest death for woman’s woe,
Despite thy flame-like beauty’s glow,
The deed cannot thy beauty see,
A corpse’s ransome thou must be!
