ABSTRACT
Robert Nares, later Archdeacon of Stafford, was one of the editors of the British Critic, which was founded in 1793 as a by-product of a ‘Society For The Reformation Of Principles By Appropriate Literature’. Maria Riddell (No. 22) wrote to Currie on 16 January 1801, ‘Are you satisfied with the British Critic? I trust you are. Nares promised to Review your publication himself. That secured, I guess’d, à peu près the Opinion he would profess of it’ (BC (1923), p. 84).
