ABSTRACT

BERLANT AND FREEMAN FOCUS ON the gay and lesbian political organization Queer Nation and its creative challenges to public spaces that claim neutrality but are, in fact, heterosexual and white. Earlier in the essay excerpted below, they locate Queer Nation's origins at an ACT UP New York meeting in 1990. Its aim was ‘to extend the kinds of democratic counter-politics deployed on behalf of AIDS activism for the transformation of public sexual discourse in general ’ (198).
