THE STREETS OF WHICH CONQUERGOOD writes are in a Thai refugee camp, where Hmong people, forced from their mountain home, eke out an existence. There the traditional cultural forms offer sustenance, continuity and a vehicle for learning how to adapt to wrenchingly difficult and unfamiliar living conditions.
