ABSTRACT

IN THE EARLY 1970S, WHEN I happened upon this account of troupes of actors traveling with the Red Army in the years leading to the Chinese revolution, I was astounded that actors were so integrated into the major events of their times. Despite his sometimes condescending tone, Snow, one of the first Westerners to document the Chinese revolution, admiringly depicts the vitality of these theatre contingents in the 1930s and 1940s.
