ABSTRACT
This review by Charles Eliot Norton (1827—1908) appeared in Putnam’s Monthly in New York in September 1855. Norton, who was to be the first professor of the history of art at Harvard and the editor, with James Russell Lowell, of the North American Review, was impressed enough with Whitmans style to attempt writing some ‘free verse’ of his own.
