ABSTRACT

Based on his best-selling novel of the same name, 1 Bertrand Blier’s Les Valseuses was the French box-office hit of 1974. It owed its immense success to its controversial subject-matter, its energy and verve and, above all perhaps, to the extraordinary performances of its three stars, Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere and Miou-Miou, and while it continues to be attacked as vulgar and misogynist it has also been considered representative of a generation, 2 and over the years it has acquired the status of a cult movie.
