ABSTRACT

All roles are played by one female performer. TE ATAKURA (KURA)

Twenty-one years. Māori. Lives with her Aunty Lizzie and Uncle Walter somewhere in the suburbs.

TIA

Twenty-three years. Māori. A student. She is Kura’s new friend. Tia moves to a funky reggae beat.

LIZZIE

Fifties. Māori. Married to Walter. She has brought up Kura since she was an infant. Her prop is a tall-standing silver ashtray. She chain-smokes and keeps a hanky tucked up her sleeve.

WALTER

Fifties. Pākehā. An old fisherman and hunter who still clings to the past. Sits in an old armchair watching television.

MIRO

Late thirties. Māori. Kura’s mother. She carries a tokotoko (carved walking stick). She is seen as a ghost or memory brought alive by Kura’s imagination. Kura is a baby in Miro’s scenes; she lies in a cradle nearby.
