ABSTRACT

Within the last hundred years, there have been great changes in every corner of these four hundred square miles of the South China coast. In 1923 Dr Sun Yat Sen was able to remark that there had been more modification in less than a century here in Hong Kong than had been seen in China with a history of four thousand years. Even though the changes have been rapid and significant, they have not occurred with the same degree of intensity in all parts of the Colony. In some of the more remote areas glimpses of the past can still be traced. The community of Tung Chung is one of many amongst this type but it is certainly the largest of them all both in terms of area and of population.
