ABSTRACT
THERE IS a story that goes around the British Army about a message that was sent down a line of soldiers in a trench during a battle: 'Send up reinforcements, we are going to advance'. By the time the message had passed through twenty or thirty different persons and reached the other end of the line it had become, 'Lend the Major fourpence, he's going to a dance.'
