ABSTRACT

THE TYPICAL French child does not exist. Children m France diner very much according to the region in which they were born; there are considerable cultural differences between the little villages far away in Brittany and those in the south or south-west of France, or, again, in the north. There is a great variety of regional environments and, of course, of social backgrounds. Standards of living vary according to the economic situation, education and knowledge vary, and all this goes to make up a complex regional background. I think it is impossible to give a complete or accurate idea of the general pattern of child development in France, so I must apologise in advance for what can only be partial and personal conclusions.
