ABSTRACT

IT is now necessary to present some descriptive data about the manner in which Fijians handle commercial enterprise. The bulk of Fijian village work is concerned with day-to-day maintenance and with the production of crops, some of which is destined for household consumption, and some for the cash market. Since economic growth in the modern world is fundamentally dependent upon involvement in commerce, the key to Fijian economic growth is to be found in this rather than in subsistence activities.
