ABSTRACT

The village is situated in an idyllic valley, with a clear stream watering grass and fruit trees. There is a mixture of Fijian type houses, and others of weatherboard, small and enclosed in private fences. In the general area, each approached by branch roads, are small manganese mines, open cut out of the hillsides; and high on the mountain overlooking the village is the main mining centre, identified by its grouping of office and workers' cottages and, lower down, the large waste pile.
