ABSTRACT

These incidents can be examined from a compensatory perspective (Grunert 1993; Woodrufle 1997) as they reflect a lack of satisfaction and the need to escape, or a lack of po,ver or control (in work situations). In the case of E, her attitude to fashion, and, in particular, repeated accounts of selecting and 'Nearing the 'right' clothes, the 'right' suit (Woodruffe 1998) could be explored via, for instance, the literature on self and identity creation (e.g. Giddens 1991; Thompson 1995) and the notion of an idealised self (Ferguson 1992), which also relates to J's account of searching for the right dress.
