ABSTRACT

Like Austin Powers, John Steed travelled successfully from the sixties to the nineties. He made a double return. Not only did the character make his reappearance in a new, big-screen version of The Avengers (1998), but Patrick Macnee, who had captivated 1960s television audiences with a ‘camp’ 1 mixture of city-gent traditionalism and swinging pop style, reaffirmed his status as a popular cultural icon, as he reprised his role in the video for the 1996 Oasis single Don’t Look Back in Anger.
