ABSTRACT
Located In northwestern South America, Colombia is crossed from north to south by three ranges of the Andes Mountains. The southeastern region connects to tributaries of the Amazon River while the Magdalena, Colombia's principal river, empties into the Caribbean Sea. Covering an area of 1.14 million square kilometres (439,700 square miles), Colombia had a 1992 population of 34.3 million.
