ABSTRACT
One of the northernmost countries in South America, Venezuela is a land of physical diversity, with the Andes Mountains in the west, tropical forests in the east and south, and vast lowlands (llanos) in the centre. Covering 912,100 square kilometres (352,100 square miles), it is bordered by Colombia, Brazil and Guyana. Venezuela's 1992 population was 18.9 million.
