ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on grass roots local partnerships in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) that are active in regeneration and employment policies. While not necessarily being known as ‘partnerships’, but working in a similar way, German local partnerships normally take the form of an association, including partners from all three sectors (public, private and the not-for-profit/community sector). A short historical survey on social and economic development including a characterization of social exclusion is followed by descriptions of three case studies representing the characteristic types of partnership.
