War in modern Latin America book
The military plays an important role in our images of Latin America. Both popular media and academic analyses assume that the military has been and remains the critical state actor. It would be hard to imagine a region more associated with a strong military tradition or one where armed conﬂict was apparently so central.1 Yet, while Latin American militaries have interfered in politics and often served as repressive policemen, they have rarely functioned as the more traditional roles of soldiers.
