ABSTRACT

We are all experts on movie blockbusters. “Event movies” target the mass audience, making lack of knowledge of their existence virtually impossible. We may as individuals choose to consume them, or we may choose to avoid them, but either way we share in common the simple fact of knowing something about them. It is very difficult to imagine meeting someone on the street who did not possess some level of familiarity with blockbusters such as Gone with the Wind (1939), The Sound of Music (1965), Star Wars (1977), and Titanic (1997). If we were to meet such a person we might find their ignorance strange and disturbing.
