ABSTRACT

The traditional view of assessment is concerned with tests and exams leading to grading of students’ achievement. However, assessment is much broader in scope, coming into play every time a judgement is made about learning. In this conception of assessment, the vital role is that of providing feedback to learners and teachers. Feedback is essential if language learners are to progress and if teachers are to develop and adapt teaching methods. For this reason, assessment is an important thread running through all learning contexts. Exams and tests can also provide feedback and help to inform future decisions about teaching and learning. When assessment is an integral part of the learning process rather than just a bolt-on, it provides the integration between current and future learning, as shown by the diagram below.
