ABSTRACT

There are many ways to motivate pupils, such as displaying their work, creating an environment conducive to learning, rewards systems, keeping the pace of lessons flowing, positive discipline and clear ground rules. But any amount of attention to these issues will be ineffectual unless we consider carefully what we require pupils to do in the classroom. In this chapter we concentrate on effective classroom management methods. If learning activities are sufficiently motivating and require pupils to really engage in their learning, then they will stay ‘on task’ and our teaching will be more successful. We shall consider:

developing group work;

developing routines;

creating clear contexts for learning;

offering pupils a challenge.
