ABSTRACT
The first consideration in this paper must be to provide a definition of nursing. For without some agreement on this matter there is little point in discussing the management of this activity. A helpful starting point could be Mary Parker Follett’s definition (1965, p. 132) of the word ‘profession’, which, as she says, ‘for most people connotes a foundation of science and a motive of service’.
