ABSTRACT
Would it be fair to ask us to discuss what is the meaning of the word 'research' in this world of international conference holders and attenders, of sponsoring bodies and conference members? What kind of attitudes exist towards past experience of conference cooperation in research, from which we might get lessons or help in suggesting or designing research? What kind of sanction is required to get any kind of conference research project or programme under way, and what kind of expectations of cooperation from conference sponsors would it be reasonable for research groups to ask?
