ABSTRACT

THIS Unit of one hundred beds was established as part of the Neurosis Centre at Belmont Hospital (formerly known as Sutton Emergency Hospital) in April 1947. It had the backing of the Ministries of Health, Labour and Pensions, and its main function was to study the problem of the chronic unemployed neurotic. As was discussed in the Introduction, the Disabled branch of the Ministry of Labour is much concerned with this group, who constitute a large part of the so-called 'hard core' of the unemployed. In medical circles they are equally well known amongst the chronic attenders at various out-patient departments; they are met in every branch of medicine, and although in some cases they may have an obvious physical complaint, this complaint does not adequately explain the degree of personality and social disorganization which is found.
