ABSTRACT

This edited volume sets out to explore what it means to think about distributed learning from a social and cultural, practice-based approach. We hope that the book will serve as a useful introduction to those working across the spectrum of post-compulsory education who are finding themselves having to explore the use of new information technologies for teaching and learning in both face-to-face and open and distance learning settings. In the first section of this Introduction, we explore what we mean by the term ‘distributed learning’. We then contextualise these approaches against the backdrop of the changing context of post-compulsory education, including the breaking down of the historical distinction between distance and face-to-face teaching, and moves towards the globalisation of course delivery. Finally, we introduce you to the different chapters in this volume.
