ABSTRACT

In this Chapter 1 explore a particular model of learning (Lave and Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that stresses the importance of the construction of meaning and identity in the context of communities of learning. This social model of learning has become increasingly popular as a theoretical justification for information and communication technology (ICT)-based distributed learning. I discuss how well the key concepts of identity and community, in particular, carry over to Internet-based distributed learning.
