ABSTRACT

Can one Legitimately Complain About an excess of culture? That would be like expressing a grievance about somebody under the pretext that they are too intelligent, or too kind, or too beautiful. It will already be clear to the reader that I am not making such a charge. I am seeking rather to sound a cautionary note. For even so, as it annexes domains that do not belong to it, culture must not itself become debilitated, along with those things that, in one way or another, escape it. And similarly, such an enterprise must not end up becoming a form of harassment at a time when some people are deploring rather hastily the disappearance of culture.
